Threads: Hot Shorts: 2013 Swimwear Trends

Men, I bet you’ve been thinking about your options in your swimwear this year for hot summer days at the beach. I know we can’t sport teeny-weeny swim bottoms like they do on beaches of Rio, Saint Tropez, and even Miami. Here in the Midwest, most men prefer to wear swim trunks. The good news is that we can have fun at the beach in our bathing suits and not have to worry about the briefs vs. trunks debate. Men today have many trendy options and most retailers have made it simple to make a decision.

It seems like high-end and mass-market clothing brands keep offering newer and newer designs and silhouettes for women’s swimwear without bringing many innovations for men. A deeper look reveals that men’s swimwear trends also exist and evolve.
Recent trends from high fashion houses reveal the hemline on swim trunks are getting shorter and shorter. It’s like a modern day mini skirt revolution (though not quite as exciting).
Form-fitting trunks come in a variety of lengths and colors, and are made of a smooth stretchy material that dries quickly. These trunks don’t have any drawstrings so be careful when picking out the correct size. You’ll want to be comfortable while enjoying the sunshine.
The latest popular design of the board short is the tiny board short, the shorter cousin of the late long board short. The look is less form-fitting and ends above the knee, a trend that has been heating up the season. A nice added benefit to these shorts—it’s prepared with shallow pockets to keep your keys safe.
Having options is key and owning more than one suit is essential. If riding the waves is your forte; you’ll want to slip into a slightly longer swimsuit. With this being the more traditional swimsuit, options should be available.

Retailers such as H&M, Zara, Oiler & Boiler and TOPMAN have done a great job creating interesting graphics and prints this season to step up men’s style by offering a clever twist on graphic patterns such as flower-power, dots and animals.
